Music to My Ears
My day started off with a very strong urge to listen to music. Not just any music but the exquisite tunes of the amazing Irish singer, Enya.
That being said, I have a tendency of wanting to know how things come to be, how things work. I wondered how her music is composed and what specifically caught my ears was the sound of the piano. It’s a sound produced by an instrument that travels through the air by compressing it which in turn vibrates my ear drum at different rates depending on the note. I quickly gathered this from a simple Google search but got more questions, should it be about some notes/chords that makes it pleasing to hear, while some music makes me want to dismantle the source…
I got to think about good and bad music. What makes some people better at composing ‘’good’’ music than others? How to they put together the notes or chords? Why should a person like Beethoven (Yes I have an ear for classical music) have such talent for writing and other ‘artists’ don’t quite get it? Some music comes and goes but others live to date, what makes them stand out? Do lyrics matter, or it’s the understanding or rhythm and chords more important? (I think it’s the latter)
Great composers and producers; do they see the music in their heads or hear it with some sort of sixth sense I cannot even comprehend. By this I can explain by driving. I cannot really explain to someone how driving a car really works, it unfolds automatically. Back to music, there are people who are unable to write music but they are able to play instruments in an amazing way. Other can learn by night. How about that?
All this isn’t conclusive; we may never know the answers. Maybe music is connected to emotions, we feel sad, joyful, angry, hyped when certain music plays. Do emotions and music have a connection?
Too many questions, well and good. Its fun thou… for now lemme stop at that and give you a chance to share your opinions below.

though I havent heard to ENYA in particular I do undertand to a certain extent what you mean. This comes about by having a musical ear for something past the normal crunk hhiphop stuff. even in africa there are some great people with such music that mekes you want to delve deeper into its making. one such artiste for me is LIRA, her vocal prowess always gets to me
I see we are sailing in the same boat. An European friend of mine told me the same thing, a month ago. He plays the piano and He was appreciating the ability of African musicians to blend in so much and come up with music. From that day onwards I developed special interest in Afro Jazz and Afro Fusion. SautiSol and The Villagers and my favorite so far.
I love Enya but I go easy on her coz sometime she makes me feel funereal. I have quite a bit of her music. Someone told me she just plays with sounds on comp and comes up with a final product. dunno.
Okkk..Shiks, That is some finding, considering to how much someone can do with the computer. I’ll let her get away with it for now and I think great respect would go to Live Bands when they make music Live on stage. I’ll look out for concerts, soon.
It’s easy to take the wonderful mechanics of sound for granted. As they say “If a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound?”
Haha.. It makes a sound Matt. Music is around up, everywhere we so, It’s like one loud, harmonized song by the universe. All we need is to listen 🙂

music is celestial. personally i think its a gift to humans, to harness their ears and intellect. in music messages are told. stories, of many kinds, to many people. some people understand problems through music…. and music is pleasing. especially new age music.

I have never listened to Enya but i will concur with disaster103 on Lira. Lira’s music is awesome. You should then try and listen to Zama Jobe, an artist from Southern Africa.
