Our Wardrobes

It had been a while since I did a post. I’m glad to be back, I’ve discovered that one way to continue writing is to open a blank word document and stare at the cursor. Well, it worked for me.

I have been thinking about Identity. How you present yourself. Your choice of style, the clothes you wear. How you walk. The drink you order and the joints you heng at.

Most of us have adopted a dress code for years. We have had a specific hair trim and groomed in a particular way. From a male point of view, this is very important. It ranges from the fragrances we wear, to the watches, shoes and belts we have and how we put it all together in different occasions. Men rarely change a certain trend.

Ladies, more often than not, dress up for other ladies to notice. It’s a competition among them and I attest to this since I’ve asked my close friends. I look forward to a lady contributing an article to feature here with a little more insight on the same. [Write to: egichomo@gmail.com]

Well, gentlemen, There are some ideas I’d like to share. Most of these are from general observation and open for debate. I shall start with some mistakes to avoid which most of you will agree with me: Let us not blare designer labels. This look had best be left for F1 drivers. Socks with sandals is another no no. For those in the corporate society, loose fitting clothes and shiny and glittering suits and shirts are simply bad. Horrible choice I must say. This carries on to the colors we choose. Beige is just a weird color for shirts. When carrying a laptop to a meeting/office, backpacks shouldn’t be a choice. This goes for gym outfit too. There are some nice laptop bags out there, and again avoid conspicuous labels.

Moving on to a lighter note, there are some assets that every man’s wardrobe should have. This includes a Grey Suit, Black shoes and belt, White shirt, Solid color ties, a Jacket, Khaki and Jeans, casual shirts and athlete wear. You don’t have to be an athlete plus they look best when your lady changes into them.

For the above, men don’t groom themselves for hours. We are simple but there are some rules that shouldn’t be broken. Simple basic rules, if I may call them so.

  • Match your belt, shoes and watch straps. You can never go wrong with black and brown. Silver watch straps can be done with either black/brown shoes.
  • Choose the right tie for your shirt. There are some awesome tie knots you can try out here.
  • The socks should match the pants, and lets leave white socks for the gym. As for trousers, I prefer Flat Front trousers to Pleated ones. What’s your take?
  • Wear the right cologne. Don’t go cheap on this one, look for a unique, nice fragrance to wear depending on the occasion. You can’t go wrong with a Stained, designer cologne. (The ones with a color, eg. green, brown…)
  • The time machine is a man’s most important tool. Remember, if you have leather straps, blend them in with the belt and shoes. Don’t wear a freaky, flashy watch neither.

I am not a fashion designer but these are my personal opinions. Above all, remember to keep your head up and wear the best thing of all, a Smile. Share below, let’s make this fun! Cheers!

I think that with ties, gents need to ensure that they always land up to just above the belt. It looks so tacky when the tie is at the mid-rib section. Plus it should sit nicely on the neck of the shirt and not lopsided.

True Chiira. I think most of the tips are mainly the ‘Do Not’ coz dudes don’t have a lot of things to note. However when a dude gets it wrong, it can be a big WRONG!
I’m working on a look, you’ll tell me what you think 😀 Cheers bro!

Egichomo did I just read a grooming post without a mention of the underworld? It’s the genesis come on! Guys get nice niniis. Enough of them. Many of them. And throw into the shopping basket nice clean hankies in the process. Many.

And while you’re out shopping for fragrance, you may want to take a sniff of Etienne Aigner’s X-Limited. We’ll drool. At least I will.

Pleated trousers. Something already sounds odd about them. And that’s before you wear them, sit down and they create this pouf effect…….. no thanks.

Yes, and don’t-touch-my-heels trousers or anything close to that belong to Michael Jackson.

And please belts that fit please. Too much belt at the end of the waist…. and it doesn’t get to the next loop…. and then it hangs out awkwardly.

Hahahaha… I think Shiko you are the best person to contribute an article on Fashion.

I think X-Limited is also awesome! Saw some nice reviews on it, I will give it a shot now that I know how well it can work on the ladies.

Pleated trousers with unfitting belts definitely make another no-no 🙂 Thanks for contributing.

Ok, I agree on most of this but please can you guys wear antiperspirant deodorant, and bush your teeth regularly (2 or 3 times a day – or more if necessary). While I’m at it, when you wash your feet, please scrub with a brush, get that stinky dcrap from under your nails. Sandals look BAD on guys and for some reason make mens feet stink. Onto undergarments – please leave those bloomer style ones for the last generation. Microfibre shorts (or boxers) are the coolest. Choose nice colours NOT baby blue. All the black, white grey and beige makes me feel quite depressed – dudes, get some colour into your lives, wear something adventurous not those boring western suits everyday! Finally, it’s how you carry it off that matters, it reveals a lot about your spirit.

Spot on Paula, Well said. We share the same sentiments when it comes to odor turn offs. It’s very frustrating because ladies fall victim too.
I take up the challenge of going adventurous. I hope to pull it off thou…
Interesting how undergarments are a lady’s major focus. It definitely calls for attention.

For a guy who works away from home, would it not be better to have some chewing mints? For boxers, i think the colours you dont like to see are what work best with most guys.
